The solo dancer, vocalist and musical team present short compositions with words and meanings in a spectrum of moods. The predominant theme in modern Shabdam is love and it ends with salutation. The dancer performs a Korvai (sequence) to the rhythm of the beat, presenting to the audience the unity of music, rhythm and movements. It is difficult piece and belongs to the Nritta category, the drums set the beat of any carnatic music raga (melody). Jatiswaram is usually presented as the second item. Alarippu belongs to Nritta variety with emphasis on pure foot work and bodily movements. The purpose of performing this item at the beginning of a program is to enable the body and limbs to get prepared for performing more difficult dances. This dance has various names like Alaroo, Alaris, Alarippu and Alaru. Dancer taking her Guru’s blessingsĪlarippu is a dance to welcome audience and seek blessing of the Deity, Gurus and Elders and to take their permission to perform. Have y’all ever wondered why does a traditional Bharatanatyam dance performance start with Alarippu and ends with Thillana?…Well, it’s because a traditional Bharatanatyam dance performance follows a certain sequence, right from Alarippu which is a welcome dance and ends with a Thillana which is a closing dance.
